Dr. Dominic D’Agostino is a scientist and research professor at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. Much of Dominic D’Agostino’s work focuses on ketone research and supplementation in ketogenic diets.

The ketogenic “keto” diet is a proven medical therapy for epilepsy and increasingly popular with people looking for weight loss diets or those with certain food allergies or autoimmune issues. The keto diet is high in fat and low in carbohydrates, encouraging the body to enter a metabolic state known as ketosis. When this occurs, the body begins burning excess fat with limited carbihydrates (glucose) available.

High rates of fat burning produces metabolic byproducts known as ketone bodies, which the body uses for energy instead of carbohydrates. Since the keto diet is very restrictive, many people have trouble keeping up with such strict eating habits. To help, they can take various supplements to help sustain therapeutic levels od ketosis that energize the brain and help to suppress hunger cravings.
Exogenous ketones are in various supplement formulations such as ketone esters and ketone electrolyte salts. Taking these daily supplements can help to further augment the metabolic health benefits of any diet by stabilizing glycemic variability, reducing inflammation and improving brain function.
